Wine, Dine and Design Event Monday, Feb 13 2012

Well, we did it!  We staged an empty apartment in ONE day using all our skills- thus incorporating the sheer definition of ‘holistic’ into our approach.

We were inspired by a beautiful piece of art by my dear friend Daniel V Anderson, called Treescape and thus the concept of “The Tree of Life an Eco Lifestyle” was born.

Pulling together the concept was the easy part and then manifesting it into a 3D space in 24 hours was a challenge.  But, hey we are PROBLEM SOLVERS so we rose to the challenge and from the resulting comments during the event, we obviously managed to meet the challenge with grace and skill.

I met Joe of the Westchester Business Connections while on the set of What’s Cooking in Real Estate and being of similar work ethics, we hit it off.  So when Joe asked me to be a part of the Riverview Club event, I was thrilled to be a part of the team.

Talking about what I love, having the challenge of staging an apartment in a day and meeting new people in the Westchester area – well, it was a night to be remembered.

And most importantly, I believe it is a new chapter to be repeated many times again to share our work with the world, demonstrate our skills and of course, to drink wine while chatting with other inspiring professionals.

A BIG  thank you to my team and to both the Riverview Club and The Westchester Business Connections for their inspired idea of venturing with us!

Feng Shui Colors in a Beautiful Beach House Sunday, Jan 29 2012

Living Room with Purple & Red

Again as we are in the midst of winter, I find myself thinking of sunny places and projects where I worked on projects near the seaside.

I recently worked on a amazingly beautiful Beach House for a client of mine in Long Beach, New York.  And one of the main goals was to incorporate FENG SHUI COLORS into the overall finish scheme of the house.  I have been an Interior Architect and Interior Designer for over 20 years and this inter linking of the two philosophies was an interesting and awe inspiring exercise!!

Each room of the house is set in a specific area of the Feng Shui Bagua (otherwise known as the Feng Shui Map) and the Bagua is used to help Feng Shui Specialists read the energy of a space.  It is a multi dimensional process and is never straightforward however to explain this process note that ever section has a set of criteria within it.

For example the Gua or area typically called the PROSPERITY corner includes such elements as Growth, Abundance, and Wealth.  It is set in the South East, relates to the Pelvis in the body, the element Wood and the Animals Dragon and Snake.  It also is typically associated with the Colors Green/Purple/Red.

So based on the COLORS for each section we set about designing the house with a COLOR SCHEME that would utilize this to reinforce the positive Feng Shui of this families new beachside home.  The challenges included the openness of the space, the need for the house to be lived in year round, the multiple family members plus the keen sense of the owners to be authentic to the Feng Shui Colors as much as possible.  We used the principles of Feng Shui throughout the entire house but I am especially proud of the Feng Shui living room.  It combined the use of the colors in paints, onyx, curtains, custom made furniture plus purchased items and a Wall Hanging Calligraphy by  the last HH Thomas Lin Yun.  All of this combined to create a spectacular environment!
The resulting home is a true reflection of the OWNERS VIBRANT ENERGY plus a combination of Interior Design and Feng Shui at its best – a rainbow of colors that embrace you upon entering the space and glide you from room to room, with never an interruption of the interaction of one with the environment in which you find yourself.  The positive chi of the Beach House is such that one tends to literally skip while in the home.

Do you think that the use of Feng Shui colors is something you would like to see in your home?

We do customized FENG SHUI COLOR  Consultations for many of our clients to enrich and transform their working & living environments.  We are happy to help ease the Year of the Dragon’s energy with a new Feng Shui Color Scheme for your home!  If you mention this article when you call us, we will give you a 15% discount!

What is Feng Shui? Sunday, Jan 22 2012

On the eve of the Chinese New Year, entering into the Year of the Water Dragon, I find it a perfect time to share the definition of what Feng Shui is and why I believe it is so important to be recognized in our world today.

According to Wikipedia, the definition of Feng Shui is a chinese system of geomancy believed to use the laws of heaven (astrology) and earth (structures) to help improve ones life by receiving positive qi (Chi).  The term Feng Shui translates literally into Wind and Water in English which is a cultural shorthand taken from a passage in the Book of Burial.

Historically, Feng Shui was widely used to orient buildings—often spiritually significant structures such as tombs, but also dwellings and other structures—in an auspicious manner. Depending on the particular style of Feng Shui being used, an auspicious site could be determined by reference to local features such as bodies of water, stars, or a compass. Feng shui was suppressed in China during the cultural revolution in the 1960s, but since then has increased in popularity.

My teachings were brought to the West through the late HH Grandmaster Professor Thomas Lin Yun.  His approach was based on the Buddhist Tantric Black Sect method and therefore has some intrinsic difference in the application, reading and ultimately the recommendations to ensure positive Feng Shui.

However, it is my belief that the basic premise and underlining element that is the MOST IMPORTANT part of Feng Shui, is the fact that it reconnects us with our environments and the important that the spaces, places and structures in which we live and work.  The understanding that these structures have a huge effect on the quality, safety and prosperity of the days of our lives.

It has seemed to me over the course of my life that I had to RE-LEARN this simply truth and this is coming from a classically trained Interior Architect, with a minor in Psychology.  I understood the “how to’s” of design, I understood the reasons why people did certain things but I had lost the understanding of the interconnectedness of People with Space.  Feng Shui gave that back to me.  It was the “glue” that ultimately gave the training I received the foundation to build my life on.

As a result of this re-learned vision, my  PURPOSE has been redefined to help reconnect people with this understanding  - that our spaces are a reflection of who we are and that they are important to the course and successes of our lives.  I aim to empower people to recognize this truth again and to guide them to the creation of spaces that reflect their very best selves.

May 2012 be the year you reconnect with your environment and create spaces to enhance your life so you can give your best self to the world.

May the Dragon bring you & yours Prosperity, Health, Success, Joy & Peace.

The Flatiron Building Friday, Jan 20 2012

One of Lee's favorite buildings...

Located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway, The Flatiron Building is definatly one of the most ICONIC BUILDINGS in New York City.  And it is one of Lee’s  favorite buildings because of its beauty, presence & its history of controversy from the get go.  Not to mention its inherent  feng shui “cure” for the traffic flow of the area.

The Flatiron Building was built in 1902 and designed by Chicago Architect Daniel Burnham with construction oversight by Architect Frederick P. Dinkelberg.    Orginally called The Fuller Building, The Flatiron was intened to serve as office for the Geroge A. Fuller Company, a major Chicago contracting firm.

It was designed in the Beaux Arts style, with a SKELETON of STEEL and fronted with Limestone & Terra Cotta.  It used a lot of the new design trends discovered at the 1893 World Columbian Expo and was considered a very UNUSUAL looking structure to the dismay of the public who were in SHOCK at such a striking contrast to the previous building styles.  The freestanding tower, never to be the tallest building in the city, but has become one of the most photographed for its UNIQUENESS.

FUN FACTS about the FLATIRON:

  • No ladies restrooms were included in the original design!  A big over site for the females!
  • The building took its name from the TRANGULAR lot on which it was built.
  • Because of its shaped, locals called it”the COWCATCHER” or “the flatiron”
  • The residents of the area QUESTIONED ITS STABILITY.  They would place bets on how far the debris would spread when the wind knocked it down, and even nicknamed The Flatiron, Burnham’s Folly.
  • It is only 22 stories high, 307 feet high & at its vertex, it is ONLY 6.5 feet wide (2m).

And although it started with such skepticism, it has lasted the TEST of TIME  on so many levels.

Interestingly enough, the Flatiron now it often is seen as a well designed FENG SHUI CURE  for the energy caused by the traffic in this area of the city, dispersing the flow of massive amounts of traffic/energy into a well divided and more manageable paths.  And its unique BEAUTY has withstood the test of time, still being one of the most photographed buildings in New York City.

Gandia Blasco NYC Friday, Jan 20 2012

Cold days of winter always make me think of reclining on the beach.  Funnily I always find myself in the design part of my library looking at things like this incredible DAYBED, reclining on the beach, reminding me of lazy days last winter in South Beach with some dear friends, getting sun burnt & sipping drinks.

Gandia Blasco in NYC is an inspirational source of BEAUTY.

Karel’s Journey Monday, Nov 14 2011

I first met Karel thru a newly acquainted colleague (The Expert Organizer) who thought I could help her friend finally move forward on a renovation project after deliberating about it for over two years. I was flattered to think my approach to design projects gave this new colleague such confidence in my skills to create movement forward.

Amy saw something in me which is often difficult to recognize in ourselves – the passion to help people move forward with their dreams. My passionate approach to my work and my belief that our spaces support and reflect us is so much a part of me that it’s nice to have another person reflect back to us how we shine in the world.

After meeting Karel, and chatting thru all the options available including the  pros and cons of buying a new place versus a renovation project, I thought  that it would take some time to get the momentum to move this job forward.

I was surprised!  After a brief but positive meeting with Karel’s mother, (who, although disagreed with my recommendations but respected my professionalism coupled with gentle approach), a contract was signed and almost before I knew it we embarked on a renovation project.

The design creation developed from my signature Magic Box progress where we combined an Urban Chic with a Country Charm to design a space that reflected the client’s vision for herself going forward.

A hungry contractor with a hands on approach jump started the project and ultimately we reach the end of the job almost a year after first meeting.

The project finished on time, on budget and was a beautiful reflection of the person to inhabit it, as the design had depicted.

HOWEVER, the  real success of the job was reflected in the final week of the job which, is not only a testament of the success but a reflection of the ability to grow and expand oneself from the experience of doing surgery on your home and this as a metaphor for a onward soul search process.

On the last day of the job, I walk down the long hall toward the apartment front door, which was wide open, not a typical state.  I entered into the apartment bustling with activity from the contractors all over the place in the final stages of completion of the work.

I hear the call of Karel from her bathroom for me to come in and make myself at home while she finished getting ready for her day. I came into her personal space sat and waited while she cheerily chatted as she finished putting her make up on as part of her morning routine.  She then came out and we discussed the few punch list items. She smiled the whole way thru and when we were done she merrily said her good byes to the whole team and left.

Then it hit me – a year ago this woman would NEVER have left her home so wide open and exposed before I met her.  A year ago she was anxious, worried, and fearful. It has taken her TWO years of searching to find the right person, the right team to help her through this process.  All the terrible stories of construction and renovation jobs gone wrong, the disappointments, the costs, the stress, and the horrible tales heard through the grapevines of her friends of friends.

And yet, here she was, one year after meeting me,  at the end of a long an often challenging project, happily enjoying the process, comfortable, wide open, and she was a TRUE REFLECTION of the newly designed home she now lives in.

The Magic Box vision was a chic happy upbeat altogether youthful and sophisticated woman.

In that moment, the success and the truth became clear to me – the process changed not only the face of the apartment and my client’s home but it too had positively affected changing Karel herself.

Balancing – Act 1 Thursday, Jul 7 2011

As  a Holistic Interior Architect, I am always striving to live a balanced & holistic lifestyle.  This includes my own home, my interaction with nature and my own holistic nutrition.  While being aware of the very yang energy of living in a city, I am also very aware of the need to connect with nature every once in a while to add some yin into the equation to balance things out.

This past weekend was one of those experiences, and although amazing on many levels, it is a true indicator that my life is not in 100% perfect balance & harmony for the way in which I strive for it to be.

I escaped to the Adirondack Mountains into the wilderness with a clan of other like-minded souls needing this escape from city life. Our fearless leaders are part of a group called Outdoor Bound – an organization made to simply supply the means to this end. I think of them as a personal gift.

My reintroduction into the city, however, was such a shock to my system, that this is the true indicator to me about the imbalance I am living daily.  The feng shui of my own bedroom and the feng shui of my living room came into a clearer picture and I knew I needed to re evaluation it all again to help with the balancing act!

My goal as a result? To try to find more time for balance & harmony on a daily, weekly, monthly basis and not to simply reserve it for the one, two, or three times a year when I book these breaks.

Although, given the fast pace world in which we live, I am sure to rely on my new friends at Outdoor Bound and more frequently get my rebalancing fixes.  My personal definition of holistic is about this very ebb & flow of our needs and making sure we continually work to balance it.
